St. Maarten – Day 5 & 6

Monday, December 21, 2015 & Tuesday, December 22, 2015

So, Monday was a bad day – and I’m getting around to writing this on Wednesday evening…

Monday started out like a normal day.  Marcus had his diving trip booked, so I was going to stay at the resort and do laundry (Ha!).  Marcus booked a two tank dive with Aqua Mania, primarily because they have a presence at the Divi and offered pick up here at the resort.  The sea has been really rough since we got here.  In fact, we’ve had two other trips cancel because of the sea conditions.  Monday’s sea was still pretty crazy, so I expected the trip to cancel, but it didn’t.  He was picked up early, before 09:00, so I stayed in to write about Sunday and start laundry.  As I was sitting down to write Sunday’s blog a text came across my phone from our Angie, Marcus’ Aunt, who is also our dog sitter.  She had said our P-dog wasn’t acting like herself.  We exchanged a few texts, vet information, normal behaviors, etc.  I assumed our dog was just tired, because she’d been running around for 5 days at this point…but I had a sinking feeling, something was wrong.  I tried not to focus on that – (Or laundry) and grabbed a new book and headed down to the beach.  I was early and lucky enough to end up with a couple of chairs and a beach umbrella in the front row.  I managed to read half of my book – around 12:45pm, I decided to head back to the room for some lunch.  As I was headed back, I saw the dive boat returning, so I met Marcus on the dock.

We headed back to the room for some fruit, meat, cheese and more of our baguette.  Marcus scanned the GoPro footage and talked about his dive.  First dive site was pretty intense – high chop and a strong current, but the second dive was immensely better.  I checked my phone.  No new puppy updates – so back to the beach we went.  As per our usual, we sunned and splashed most of the afternoon.  A nap for both was definitely had, only to be woken by the fresh water shower that passed overhead.  Headed back to the room around 4:30pm for showers.  Dinner tonight was at Skip Jack’s in Simpson Bay.  We were seated by 5:45pm and the restaurant was mostly empty.  Only us and 3 other couples that early.  We both ordered one of the specials – including the special appetizer.  App was Coconut Shrimp with a Mango Salsa.  I ordered the Red Snapper, but was forced to switch that up when the Snapper was sold out (What?!).  I ordered one of the other specials – Caribbean Grouper, which was crusted in coconut.  Marcus ordered the Grilled Salmon special.  Dinner was delicious – probably the best by far.  Water to drink for both.  Total was around $70.00 with tip.

As we were leaving Skip Jack’s we came on an accident between a local and some tourists.  The local man had the tourist backed against his car and was screaming in his face.  The tourist stayed surprisingly calm, but the local man was irate.  There were other people pulling over to try and diffuse the situation, and the tourist’s wife was beginning to film the altercation with her phone.  It was a pretty hot situation and we didn’t want to stick around to see how it ended.  Turned around in front of the accident and headed back to our resort.  Traffic was just plain awful this night – the worst we’d encountered.  It took forever to get through Simpson Bay, then Cole Bay.  Eventually we discovered the culprit – a mini van had broken down just outside of Cole Bay, on a hill.  No one could see to get around…  It took us close to an hour to get back to the Divi.

Once we were back to the resort I checked my phone and found two new messages from Angie.  Our P-dog was very sick.  One very expensive phone call back home and our dog was headed to MedVet for additional tests that our vet wasn’t able to perform.  Instantly sick with worry, we spent the evening waiting by the phone for more news.  Eventually, the news we were hoping not to have to hear was delivered.  We spent well over an hour on video chat with Angie, the Veterinarian and our P-dog.  Sadly, our P-dog crossed the Rainbow Bridge Monday night.  Exhausted and upset we both finally got to bed a little after midnight.

We both woke up feeling like crap on Tuesday morning.  My eyes were swollen, puffy and burning from crying myself to sleep.  We were both in a funk, really upset about the previous night.  Neither of us could find the motivation to get up and do anything.  So, we spent the morning laying around our room, both dozing off and on in between the tears.  Around 2pm, we decided we needed a change of pace.  We both wanted to go out, unwind and not have to worry about driving.  We made a last minute decision to book a room at another hotel in Maho Village.  We kept hearing that Maho was where it was at.  All of the nightlife was supposed to be in Maho.  Our getaway within our getaway was at Sonesta Maho.  I had no idea when I booked the room that it was all inclusive.  So, discovering that upon our arrival was a very good surprise.  We wandered around Maho Village for the remainder of the afternoon – meandering in and out of stores.  We also walked down to Maho Beach to watch the sunset and catch a glimpse of planes combing and going.

Back to Sonesta for dinner.  Surprisingly, very good, very filling food. We also watched the entertainment for the night – a Caribbean Christmas program.  Dancing, singing, etc.  Marcus decided we needed to sit in the front row – so, naturally, we both got picked on…however, Marcus took the brunt of it as he was recruited into the new Jackson 5 Group.  🙂

After eating and drinking our fair share, we headed back to the room.  We had passed through the casino to find only 2 people at a BlackJack table, one guy at Three Card, and a handful of people at some slots.  There was nothing happening at any of the restaurant bars or the casino…so we decided to stay in the room and were asleep before 11pm.
